Hát Xoan (Xoan singing) played in custom ceremonies...
Hát Xoan (Xoan singing) played in custom ceremonies, bringing religious characters and closely attaching to festivals in home villages such as faith of offering sacrifices to the village deity was a folklore cultural product originated from Hung King ancestral land (Phu Tho).
Xoan singing, also called Hat Xuan, was generated from folk dance and song genres in Van Lang capital (Viet Tri) by Nguyen Cu prince regime Hung King 17. In Ly dynasty, Ly Than Tong King’s wife helped Xuan guild to sing in front of communal houses. Avoiding her name (Lan Xuan), they called Xoan singing instead. Xoan singing is different name of Xuan singing that means singing in springtime. They played Xoan singing only in front of communal houses so it is also called “Khúc đình môn” (communal house singing).

Exiting many legends of generating Xoan singing, but there was a common idea: Xoan singing is a sacrifice singing genres playing in village festivals in order to wish the health, security, prosperity to villagers and abundant crops.
Xoan singing combined both dance and sing. Otherwise, it portrayed nature, simple working life in Vietnamese ancient villages.
Xoan singing night lasted from dusk to early dawn, containing three periods:
- Ceremonial period: extolling god’s services and praying for the health, security and exceeding crops.
- Cach singing period: including 14 parts describing natural insights in seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter) or the then daily life or relating stories in olden times.
- Festival singing period: This was the most exciting and lively time ending Xoan singing night.
Xoan singers gathered in a group called Xoan guild, including 6 male and 12 female artists singing in different voices. Female artists were called Kép and male artists were called Đào. Leader of Xoan guild was a middle-aged man knowing by heart great number of Xoan songs, Demotic script and being trusted by villagers, who taking charge of guiding Đào and Kép to sing and dance, managing and dealing with villages where Xoan guild perform.
Xoan singing played in many villages of Phu Tho, but only taken part shows by 4 villages: Kim Đại (Kim Đơi or Kẻ Đơi), Phù Đức, Thét (Thet hamlet), An Thái (belong to Phong Châu district).
Xoan singing is worship singing and lyric singing as well. Along with its engaging and beauty, Xoan festival has won audience’s heart and being an invaluable heritage.
