Dao Dao is a musical instrument of the idiophonic family, striking and beating branch of the Kh’Mu ethnic group living in Lai Chau and Son La provinces.
Dao Dao is made from hornless bamboo section, 1m to 1.2 m in length, 3-4 cm in diameter. All nodes are hollowed out except for the last one. At the 2/3 of Dao Dao, the two edges of the section are cut upside-down, so each has the length of about 30 cm.
Later, each of these edges is thinned inside and rounded at its end. At the end of air part near the node, two pressing holes are dugged to create 3 pitches.
When performing, the right hand holds the Dao Dao, and its thumb and forefinger press the pressing hole. The left hand beats the Dao Dao with certain rhythms. When beating, the two remaining bamboo edges shake and make cracked and low vibrated sound at air part.
Kh’Mu people used Dao Dao to make rhythm for dancing and singing.
It can be said that Dao Dao is a soul musical instrument in daily singing activities and ritual activities of the Kh’Mu ethnic group.
