The Dai drum is of the percussion instruments of Viet people.
The dai drum has the similar shape with the sam drum. Two drumheads are leathered and the diameter is about 80 cm. The drumframe is made of hard wood about 120 cm high, painted red and decorated with patterns.
The drumstick is made of the gang wood lathed roundly (one end big and one end small) about 60 cm long.
The sound of the dai drum is deep and resounding. The dai drum is performed in the great orchestra (in Nguyen dynasty), in the huyen orchestra, in duong thuong chi nhac orchestra (in the later Lê dynasty), and in processions.
The dai drum is played with the gang-wood drumstick. Pagodas often have the đại drum, which is played alternately with the big bronze bell or the big gong. The đại drum is present in processions. Because it is so big, it is often put on the trolley for movement.
