Rock band Ngu Cung (Pentatonic) aims to contribute quality music

Update at 30/03/2010 10:57

Five-member rock band Ngu Cung (Pentatonic) has surprised fans with the news that 2,000 of their recently released CD will be distributed free of charge.

They dedicated their first-ever album 360,000 Days to Vietnamese rock fans and wanted to do their part to contribute a "quality product" to the music market in Viet Nam, according to the band’s manager, Bui Thanh Ha.

"360,000 Days is also the title of a song in album, which praises the magnanimous 1,000-year history of the capital," Ha said.

The album contains nine debut songs and two bonus tracks, which have been performed by Ngu Cung before. Some songs in the album are imbued with typical cultural features of northern mountainous minority groups.

While the song Gia Com Dem Trang (Pounding Young Sticky Rice in Moonlight) springs from the custom of the Tay ethnic group, the Cuop Vo, Tuc Le Nguoi Mong (Wife Kidnap, Custom of Mong People) is about a very famous traditional custom of the Mong ethnic group.

Most songs in the album were composed by the band’s lead vocalist Tran Thang, whose mother is a Tay ethnic woman. "Thang himself was born in the mountainous province of Thai Nguyen, that’s why his songs always present a glimpse of northern mountainous culture. It can be said, we have built up our ‘trademark’ thanks to those songs," Ha said.

Du Tien

(Fairy Swing) is another song containing traditional images. Adapted from a poem by the 18-century famous female poet Ho Xuan Huong, the song is about the feeling of couples playing this traditional game.

Another highlight of the album is the song East, which was composed by an American musician, Richard Steven Pavelep.

"Richard is not only the creator of the song, but also joins the band to present this English-lyric song. Like the name itself, the song replicates a mystic atmosphere of the East," Ha said.

Other songs in the album are Nu Hon Tren Dinh Fanxipan (Kiss on Mt Fanxipan), Long Nguc Toi (Dark Rib-cage), Noi Dau (The Pain), Tuyet Trang va Hoa Do Quyen Do (White Snow and Red Azalea Flowers).

Already 4,000 CDs have been released with the financial sponsorship of Honda Viet Nam.

"We gave 400 CDs to our fans during a performance to promote 360,000 Days on July 17 in Ha Noi. The remaining 1,600 free CDs will be distributed to our fans living in other regions nationwide through the website www.rockpassion.vn," Ha said.

The band pursues a progressive and hard rock style, has won the first prize at the national rock band contest, Rock Your Passion, in 2007.
